Make Your Wall Art Look like a Professional Job
We’ve put together some useful tips, even some used by art gallery curators and museum directors so that you can as well hang your wall art like a specialist and give your photos the attention they deserve.
Get the height right
It’s always best to try it out on your own and figure out what runs best in your space. Although a simple thumb rule is to hang your wall art about 145 -155 cm from the ground to the centre of the canvas. However, the height is also reliant on factors like furniture and ceiling height, so it doesn’t have to be an inflexible rule.
Think about the wall to art ratio
We suggest you follow the 4/7 rule. This means that when working with a blank wall, you should fix pieces that take up no more than 4/7 of the width of the wall. A quick and easy way to measure this is to multiply the width of your wall by 0.57. For example, if your wall is 4 metres wide, then calculate 4m x 0.57, which is about 230cm.
Since now you know the ideal wall-to-art ratio, you will need one or more pieces of wall art that add up to 230cm in width. For example, you could have two pieces of wall art that are 80 cm wide and leave 70cm of empty wall in between them as a gap. This adds the total width to 230cm (70 + 80 + 80 = 230), which is 4/7 of a 4m wall. Centre them on your wall, and voila! – the perfect ratio.
Mix and match your furniture and wall art
Your wall art and furniture don’t need to fight for attention. Make them work by these helpful tips.
Above the sofa
Ensure your living space look its best by following these tips for hanging wall art above your couch.
- Your wall art (or grouping) shouldn’t be less than 2/3 the length of the sofa.
- Use one large piece or two smaller pieces in a group or more to create the size you need.
- Photos should not be broader than the sofa otherwise it will overwhelm the room.
- Your frame’s bottom should hang 20 to 25cm above the back of the sofa.
- When hanging a group of photos, leave 5 to 15cm between each frame for proper spacing.
Above the bed
Your bedroom should be a place of quiet and serenity, so don’t crowd your walls with too much wall art. Instead, pick one or only individual pieces to hang them above your bed with the following steps:
- Your piece of wall art should be about 2/3 the length of your bed or headboard.
- The bottom of the piece should be between 20-25cm above the bed or headboard.
- If you do decide to hang more than one, leave about 5-15cm of space between each piece.
Make a wall art grid
A wall art grid will consist of several distinct pieces but all in the same size and shape to create a balanced display on your wall.
- First of all, you need to choose an even number of pieces that are of the same length and width. It works better with smaller pieces, so try not to go wider than 20cm.
- Make sure the straight focal point of the grid sits at 145-155cm from the bottom of the floor.
- Hang half of the picture pieces above the horizontal centre and arrange the other half below, ensuring the vertical and horizontal distances between each section are constant.
- Choose to leave 5cm of vertical distance and 7cm of horizontal distance between each piece. As a thumb rule, don’t move more than 5-7cm of empty gaps between each piece.
